Education: MS – Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison (1985); BS – Social Studies/Political Science from UW-Madison (1980). I earned two years of doctoral credits at the Univ. of St. Thomas prior to my sons being diagnosed with Autism. I left my doctoral studies to advocate for my children.
Interest in Variety of Disabilities: My three sons are young adults adjusting to this phase of their lives. In addition to dealing with their developmental disabilities and needs, I have many years of experience working with people with industrial injuries and illnesses with many kinds of covarying disabilities. My experience in dealing with multiple kinds of disabilities assists me in doing Social Security Vocational Expert Testimony in helping to determine and distinguish disability vs. employability.
Credentials and Experience: In addition to a master's degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison, I am a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Certified Case Manager. Master's degree preparation included work at the University of Wisconsin Waisman Center on Mental Retardation at a simulated sheltered workshop. Other experiences included work with the State of Wisconsin Workers Compensation Project and a job doing placement of injured workers in the Twin Cities.
Following graduation from Partners in Policymaking, I served on a variety of boards and committees: This included Unlocking Autism, the Hennepin County Children's Mental Health Collaborative, The Robbinsdale Area Schools Special Education Advisory Council, and have been a member of other, similar or related organizations. I served on the Minnesota Association of Rehabilitation Providers on the ethics committee, as membership chair, and ultimately as chair of the entire organization.
As part of my divorce in 2004, I got full physical and legal custody of my twins with more severe autism and half the parenting time with my oldest son with Aspergers. I am now guardian of my twins with the most severe levels of autism. I got remarried in 2010 to Anne, a pharmacist.
Hobbies: I enjoy good books, plays, and movies. Having grown up in Madison, WI, I remain a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers. It is a joy to root for a team that can occasionally win a Superbowl. I do root for our other MN teams including the Timberwolves, Lynx, Twins and Wild.
